Working full-time in professional sports and witnessing rapid shifts in world-leading industries like finance, technology, and artificial intelligence, I found myself in an optimal time to challenge myself and take the biggest milestone in my educational career. I was certain of two things: I did not want to step away from my job (currently serving as strategist in baseball operations & pro scouting for the Texas Rangers), and I wanted a program that offered a hands-on learning environment without requiring me to be on campus full-time.

Why MSQM Worked For Me

After evaluating the top universities in the country, I narrowed my choices down to a handful that offered hybrid structures with synchronous learning rather than fully asynchronous classes. The accelerated MSQM: Business Analytics degree at Fuqua quickly became my top choice once I saw its comprehensive curriculum and the frequent opportunities to spend time on campus.

When I first joined the program, I found myself thinking what most candidates or prospective students have been through: Is this the right program for me? Am I capable of handling the workload? Is this the right fit? Beginning this program meant dealing with the unknown and uncertainty. What was clear was that I had a massive challenge ahead of me. One that would require putting my social life on hold, restructuring my weekends, and committing to 10 to 20 rigorous hours of learning each week.

Even with that mindset, balancing synchronous classes, late-night team meetings, and job-related responsibilities has been more challenging than I ever expected. Looking back, however, I’ve cherished every part of it. I like to describe this environment as an incubator full of successful, inquisitive individuals eager to tap into a completely different tier of professional growth.

I love the quote by Confucius: “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.” Every campus visit reinforces this truth. Even during lectures, whether we are dissecting decision models, empirical analysis, or risk management, we don’t just stop at understanding the theory; we actively look for ways to apply it to our respective lines of work. This collective push is the very definition of the Fuqua culture of excellence.

Finding Connection and Flexibility

It’s easy to feel isolated in an online or hybrid program, but that hasn’t been the case for me in MSQM. As I gear up for Term 3, I’ve had the opportunity to be on campus five separate times, ranging from weekend intensives, case competitions, professional workshops, and more. Spending three to four days on campus multiple times throughout the program, combined with interacting virtually with my team several times a week, has made the experience incredibly special and fully immersive. The learning model, paired with ample opportunities to visit campus, was the immediate differentiator for Fuqua compared with other online or hybrid programs.

My experience so far in the program has exceeded all expectations. It is one thing to learn alongside classmates with impressive backgrounds, but it is another entirely to collaborate and work in group settings with successful peers who are well into their professional journeys across all different types of industry sectors. Learning from classmates who work for well-known companies and organizations has only further enhanced the remarkable experience.

At the same time, the structure of the program has allowed me to explore unique professional opportunities that I otherwise might not have. This past year, I served as the assistant general manager for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. The flexibility of MSQM made it possible to continue pursuing that opportunity while staying fully engaged in my coursework and team commitments.

Looking ahead, still a year away from walking across the stage, I am eager for everything the program has left to offer and how I can continue to apply all the skills learned to advance my professional career. The connections, memories, and relationships I am building will extend long after my time as a student comes to an end. What excites me most is that this formal academic chapter is just the beginning of my journey with Fuqua — and I look forward to continuing to live the Fuqua experience, remaining an active part of this community, and engaging with the broader family long after graduation.
