Christy Kay
Growing up on a farm in Tarboro, North Carolina, I learned invaluable life skills from a young age. My childhood was filled with unique experiences, from gathering chicken eggs to spending time in bulldozers and hydraulic excavators. Our family farm, which housed chickens, cows, goats, and horses, taught me to treat animals and the land with respect, develop a strong work ethic, and to take responsibilities seriously. Additionally, my family’s logging business exemplified the importance of hard work and dedication. These experiences ingrained in me the importance of family, staying true to my roots, and the belief that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
Professionally, my interests are in aligning management practices with business strategy to drive organizational growth and competitive advantages. I focus on ensuring that initiatives are prioritized and executed successfully in order to maximize value and support long-term organizational goals.
With more than 20 years of experience in finance and risk management, I transitioned from a solid foundation in banking into the realm of software consulting, delivery, and operations. In my current role as a senior manager, I lead the Risk Management Project Management Office, inspiring a collaborative approach to drive success and foster collaboration across all levels of the organization, both internally and externally. I believe in the power of clear communication to set expectations, motivate teams, and build strong relationships.
I’m proud to have been honored as the 2023 Most Valuable Internal Partner SMB Sales, 2022 Most Valuable Internal Partner Financial Services Sales, 2019 Sales Support Excellence Award, and being named Project Management Role Model in both 2017 and 2018.
I am a 2025 candidate of the Master of Science in Quantitative Management: Business Analytics (MSQM: BA) program at Duke University, where I serve as co-class representative. Additionally, I hold a B.S. in accounting and finance from North Carolina Wesleyan University, graduating with Cum Laude honors. I am also a certified Project Management Professional (PMI) from the Institute of Project Management.
Currently based in Wake Forest, North Carolina, I enjoy a variety of hobbies that allow me to unwind and spend quality time with my family. I love watching movies with my husband, a dedicated police officer, as well as walking and training our two dogs. We cherish time spent with our two teenage daughters which include anything from family game night to travel. I have a passion for music, and in addition to singing, I play four instruments including the piano, guitar, ukulele, and trumpet.
A Type 1 Diabetic, I joined the #WeAreNotWaiting movement in 2019. I strive to support diabetics and will not wait for disconnected health care (innovation of devices), competitors to cooperate, regulations to catch up, nor for a cure, to have access to real time personal diabetes data and to be able to maintain normalcy in life. As a part of this community, I am proud to be a part of a community that has created a personalized DIY looping system. This system “closes the loop” and tricks an insulin pump into communicating with a continuous glucose meter. I wrote code (via Xcode) that built a personalized loop app to make insulin adjustments if real time throughout the day vs. having to always make those decisions manually. This step forward has significantly improved my overall blood sugar success and has created a more balanced overall health.
My journey reflects a blend of hard-earned wisdom from my farm upbringing and a commitment to excellence in my educational and professional endeavors.
