Our Very Own Beauty
The MMS program brings together students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. The program represents students from over 20 countries, over 40 different undergraduate majors, and over 75 different undergraduate institutions. We have athletes, business owners, world travelers, and community activists. What many people don’t know however is that we have our very own beauty queen!
Elisabeth Alwynne Sloan represented Carolina Beach in this year’s Miss North Carolina pageant. A “Double Dukie,” Elisabeth studied English, political science, and visual arts here at Duke before entering the MMS program. Following Duke she hopes to merge her entrepreneurial and intellectual talents with her interests in music and entertainment, possibly within the realm of intellectual property law.
For Elisabeth, the pageant represented the opportunity to engage with her fellow North Carolinians and to serve as a role model and spokeswoman for young women, letting them know that brains and ambition are indeed a beautiful thing. Elisabeth described the actual pageant experience as challenging yet fulfilling, both in terms of the direct pressure on her as a contestant and also with respect to balancing friendship with competition with her fellow contestants.
The pageant was held in High Point, NC, on November 11, with both “Teen” and “Miss” contestants, numbering more than 80. In true Team Fuqua spirit, a number of MMS students drove out to the pageant to support Elisabeth. She placed in the top 15, among over 50 other contestants in the Miss Pageant, making all of us extremely proud. Congratulations, Elisabeth!!
