As an international student, I knew Fuqua would enable me to have many new experiences, develop new relationships, and learn a lot about myself and my new community. Just one term into the MMS program, I’m happy to say that I have already explored new cultures and connected with my classmates, both inside and outside the classroom — from walking a tightrope high off the ground to exploring the city of Durham.

Testing Our Limits at Triangle Training

One of the most exhilarating and challenging experiences I have had at Fuqua so far was participating in Triangle Training, a one-day adventure set in the heart of a forest. As someone who isn’t naturally sporty, I approached the event with a mix of nervousness and excitement. The day was designed to push us out of our comfort zones, and it certainly lived up to its promise.

The event began with a high ropes course that tested our balance and nerves. Climbing up to the tightrope was both thrilling and intimidating. As I took my first tentative steps on the narrow rope, my heart raced, and my focus narrowed to the task at hand. Each step required concentration and trust in my own abilities. The support and encouragement from my teammates, who cheered me on from below, were invaluable. Their words of encouragement helped me steady my nerves and complete the course with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Another highlight of the day was the wall-climbing challenge. Working together with my team to help each other over the wall required both physical strength and strategic thinking. We communicated constantly, offering tips and moral support as we navigated the obstacle. The experience wasn’t just about individual achievement but about fostering a sense of unity and collaboration. The collective effort to overcome the challenges created a strong bond among us, reinforcing the idea that we were all in this together.

Baseball Games and Social Outings

Another fun aspect of my time in Durham was attending local events. I had the chance to see the Durham Bulls play against Nashville, and the game was an unforgettable experience. The Bulls are a minor league baseball team based here in Durham. The atmosphere at the ballpark was electric, with fans cheering, enjoying ballpark snacks, and embracing the American pastime. Watching the game was a wonderful way to immerse myself in local culture and experience a quintessential American tradition.

Cultural Celebrations and Personal Touches

One cherished tradition I started recently was making chai for my roommates. It’s a small gesture that brings a bit of home into our shared space. Brewing a pot of chai, with its comforting spices and aromas, has become a new ritual that allows me to share a piece of my culture and enjoy a relaxing moment with my friends.

Participating in social events and cultural celebrations has also been a highlight of my Fuqua experience. The Indian Independence Day celebration at Fuqua was a vibrant and festive occasion. Dressed in traditional Indian attire, we took part in a flash mob, sang our national anthem, and enjoyed delicious samosas. The sense of unity and pride in our shared heritage made the event truly special. It was a moment of cultural pride and connection that brought us all closer together.

As I reflect on these experiences, I’m reminded that stepping out of my comfort zone, embracing new cultures, and sharing pieces of home have not only helped me grow but have also deepened my connections with this incredible community at Fuqua — a place that now truly feels like home.
