A Letter to My Past Self
This year is going to be an amazing chapter in your life, full of growth, friendships, and unforgettable moments.

Dear Past Me,
As you’re about to start the MMS: Duke Kunshan University (MMS: DKU) program, full of excitement and maybe a little nervousness, I want to share some advice from the version of you who’s already been through it. This year is going to be an amazing chapter in your life, full of growth, friendships, and unforgettable moments. Here’s what I want you to know:
First, get ready to make lifelong friends.
You’re going to meet people from all over the world, each with their own stories and perspectives. Embrace this diversity and build these connections. Some of these folks will become your closest friends, future colleagues, and a support system that sticks with you long after the program.
Try new things and don’t be scared to step out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s joining a club, volunteering for a leadership role, or diving into a subject you’ve never explored, say “yes” more often. The most rewarding experiences will come from moments when you push past fear and hesitation.

Work hard and make the most of this opportunity.
The MMS: DKU program is challenging but totally worth it. Lean into the tough stuff, whether it’s mastering a tricky accounting concept or tackling a group project. Remember, every bit of effort you put in now will set you up for future success.
Live in the moment. It’s easy to get caught up in planning for what’s next, but don’t let that overshadow the present. Savor the late-night study sessions, the weekend trips, and the casual chats that turn into deep conversations. These moments don’t last forever, so enjoy them while you can.
Explore often and keep questioning. Take time to immerse yourself in your surroundings, both on and off campus. Whether it’s finding a cool new spot in town or having meaningful talks with your professors, stay curious and open-minded.

Don’t forget to call your friends and family.
They’re your anchor, and staying connected with them will remind you of who you are and where you come from. Share your experiences, celebrate your wins, and lean on them when things get tough.
Remember that everything happens for a reason. There will be days when things don’t go as planned. When that happens, take a deep breath and trust the process. These challenges often lead to unexpected opportunities and growth.
Lastly, take full advantage of the amazing resources around you. The staff and alumni network at Duke are incredible — don’t hesitate to reach out to them. Their advice and support can open doors you didn’t even know were there.
This year will fly by, but it will leave a lasting mark on your life. Be present, stay curious, and don’t hold back. You’re about to go on an amazing adventure, and I couldn’t be prouder of who you’re becoming.
You got this!
