I was born in Qingdao, China and moved to Canada by myself starting the age of 15. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, Rotman Commerce, and then decided to embark on an adventure in the United States. The state of North Carolina and I go way back. When I was in grade 11, I had the privilege of serving as one of the Canadian student leaders for the organization Operation Smile. I was selected to attend the global Operation Smile Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. The vibrant enthusiasm at the conference left a lasting impression, I really wanted to come back to the U.S. someday.
Five years later, I made it happen! I’m back in North Carolina, and even better — I got into Duke’s Fuqua School of Business! Here at Fuqua, people are so willing to hear about why I aspire to work in the financial services industry. I feel comfortable sharing my dreams — even the ambitious ones — because everyone is so supportive and willing to help. The high level of diversity in the community makes sure that every question is heard and answered. Even if you are talking about your vulnerability, you don’t get judged, but you will be surprised how secure people will make you feel by standing on your side. I’m surprised by how much I’ve grown during this journey. I’ve started networking with confidence, taking the initiative to help others, and even challenged myself by joining the women’s basketball club!
