Married in MQM: Pursuing a Degree Together
Together, we’ve navigated academic challenges, explored the vibrant city of Durham, and built a strong support system.
They say, “Two heads are better than one.” But what if those two heads are constantly bouncing ideas off each other, sharing late-night study sessions, and navigating the whirlwind of grad school together? That’s our reality as a couple enrolled in Fuqua’s MQM program. Below, we answer a few key questions to help incoming students understand the unique experiences and challenges of pursuing a demanding, fast-paced program like MQM together at Duke.
How does pursuing the MQM program together enhance your experience?
Mahin: One of the best parts about this experience has been the ability to share responsibilities. When you’re living alone, you’re the sole manager of every task, big or small. However, you get to divide and conquer when you face challenges as a couple. Whether it’s prepping for classes, grocery runs, or navigating the intricacies of data mining, we’ve learned to tackle everything as a team.
Esha: The best part of navigating the MQM program together is having a constant supporter who fully understands the exhaustion after hours of coding. Whether it’s a much-needed hug, a strong cup of tea, or both, we have got each other. This journey has fast-tracked our growth as a couple, turning our shared space into a true home. Every day we discover new reasons to appreciate each other’s strengths, like who would have thought Mahin makes such a great breakfast? It’s these little surprises that keep us grounded and growing through the challenges.
What has been your favorite experience in Durham so far?
Mahin: Durham is great when it comes to diverse experiences. I think we had a great time learning how to play pickleball on Duke’s east campus followed by a delicious hotpot dinner on 9th Street — pretty sure the net calories were negative!
Esha: One of my favorite experiences in Durham has been exploring the trails around Falls Lake. We spent the day surrounded by nature, spotting wildlife along the way and enjoying the beautiful sunset. It was a perfect way to disconnect and recharge.
What challenges should partners consider if they decide to attend Fuqua together?
Mahin: Living together during grad school has its own set of challenges. Imagine it’s 7:00 a.m., and we both have to get ready for a full day of classes. The bus waits for no one, so we’ve had to master the art of getting ready in record time in our small room without stepping on each other’s toes. Plus, adjusting to each other’s routines and figuring out who gets the bathroom first is a balancing act.
Esha: One of the biggest challenges is to have time for each other while navigating the intensity of grad school. It’s easy to get wrapped up in assignments and deadlines, but it is also important to have the intention to spend quality time together. Balancing teamwork with personal space has also been tricky — sometimes we work together seamlessly, and other times we need to step back and support each other from a distance. Communication has been key, especially when it comes to managing stress and understanding each other’s needs.
Our journey as a couple in Duke’s MQM program has been nothing short of extraordinary. Together, we’ve navigated academic challenges, explored the vibrant city of Durham, and built a strong support system. While there have been moments of adjustment and compromise, the shared experiences and unwavering companionship have made our time here truly unforgettable.
